Accessibility gets filed under "compliance", which is a shame, because the things that make a site usable for someone with a screen reader are the same things that make it better for everyone — and for search engines.

Why it overlaps with SEO

  • Proper headings and structure help both screen readers and crawlers.
  • Descriptive alt text helps blind users and image search.
  • Good contrast and clear labels reduce confusion and bounce.
  • Fast, keyboard-friendly pages are simply better pages.

Build it in from the start and accessibility costs almost nothing. Bolt it on later and it costs a redesign. Clear, considerate design is the goal — accessibility is just what we call it when we take that seriously.
