Headless commerce is an approach to online stores where the customer-facing front end is decoupled from the back-end commerce engine, connected through APIs — giving full freedom over design and performance.
In a traditional platform, the storefront and the commerce engine are tightly bound, which limits how far you can customise the experience. Headless separates them: the back end handles products, carts and orders, while a custom front end delivers the shopping experience, often much faster.
It suits stores that have outgrown template themes and want a bespoke, high-performance experience or to sell across multiple channels. The trade-off is more up-front build effort, which pays back in speed, flexibility and conversion.
